Speechless, that is how I feel. The thoughts are racing through my mind so fast I cannot even accurately form words to verbalize them. When I consider this verse and the promises contained in it…. Wow. How can we not rejoice? How can we not look toward the future through eyes of faith filled possibility? How can we not see the favor and blessings of God that is available to us?
Yet just reading this verse is not enough to make its promises come alive in our lives. Do we want what it clearly states God wants to give to us? Certainly. But before we can receive it… we must believe it. Not like we want to, but like the Bible says to.
Let us consider certain aspects of this verse so we may believe like it says and in turn receive like it says. It records “all these things”. That raises the immediate question of what are “these things”. God has promised to give them “all” to us. With that in mind, I would like to know what I am getting.
When you begin to read the verses previous to this you find out that God is talking about “things” needed for our survival; food, clothing, and etc. If God takes care of these “things” for other aspects of His creation… how much more so for the crown of His creation – humankind. God is going to supply our needs. Let there be no doubt.
But there also is an emphasis in the verse that we cannot miss. To miss that is to miss the main thing God is saying to us in this verse. The focus of our life should not be on these “things”. Rather it should be on God. God should be first and foremost in our lives. Relationship with Him should be our greatest pursuit. Beyond even the daily survival necessities of food and water. Wow.
How much do these “things” matter to you? That nice comfortable car you just got… could you get rid of it if God asked you to? Would you? How about the corner office job that you are so proud of, would you get rid of it if God asked you to? Would you?
“All these things” are necessary. They should not define us. Above and beyond being possessors of things we should be pursuers of God. Any’thing’ we put before pursuit vacates the promise. So is there anything in your life that you put before the pursuit of God and His presence?
